Paper shredding is a great service with countless benefits to the environment.
To begin, paper shredding saves energy, prevents emissions of many greenhouse gasses and water pollutants, and reduces the need for landfills and incinerators.
As one ton of paper is shredded, 17 mature trees, 2 tons of wood, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 84 gallons of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt hours of electricity is saved. Recycling causes 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution.
Here at Shred Instead, we have seen these numbers come to life over the past three and a half years. In 2011 a total of 373,090 pounds of paper were shredded. As a result 3,171 trees, 1,305,815 gallons of water, 560 cubic yards of a landfill, 15,670 gallons of oil, and 764, 835 kilowatt hours of electricity were saved. Numbers exponentially grew in the following years, and in 2013 a total of 1,134,102 pounds of paper were shredded. 9,640 trees, 3,969,357 gallons of water, 1,701 cubic yards of a landfill, 47,632 gallons of oil, and 2,324,909 kilowatt hours of electricity were saved.
